Foreigner Café | Our Story

Where strangers become neighbors

Foreigner Café opened in downtown San Mateo in 2019 with family recipes, a small team, and one big idea: that a café could be a place where everyone belongs. Chef Nicolas Castillo brings everything to life from scratch each morning. From the Berry Croffle to the Smoked Salmon Toast to the Eggs Benedict, every plate is made with real ingredients and real care. The coffee program is just as intentional, featuring Barako from the Philippines, Peerless Coffee from Oakland, and single-origin pour-overs from Red Bay, all ground in-house. But the food is only part of the story. Foreigner was built to be San Mateo's living room, a place where you can grab breakfast with a friend, take a meeting over a cortado, or just sit with a good book. The motto says it all: Be Real, Be Kind, Be Social. Five years and 2,000+ weekly guests later, that idea is still the whole point. Whether you're a first-timer or a regular, there's always a seat for you.
Our Humble Beginnings

Our Humble Beginnings

In 2019, Anna C opened Foreigner Café, a small coffee shop with family recipes and a tight-knit team. Early days were tough, and COVID in 2020 nearly closed them. Community support and takeout kept them going. By 2025, the café thrives as a breakfast and brunch spot, serving over 2,000 weekly customers with avocado toast, breakfast bowls, and coffee, thanks to Anna’s vision and loyal neighbors.
The Art of the Bean

The Art of the Bean

Foreigner Café’s heart beats in its coffee. We proudly serve Barako from the Philippines, bold and rich, alongside Maranello from Oakland’s Peerless Coffee and Tea. Our pour-over menu features gems like Brazilian Cake Lady and East Fourteenth from Red Bay Coffee. Sourced fresh from local roasters and global farms, our beans are roasted nearby and ground in-house, ensuring every cup bursts with flavor and tells a story of its origin.
Beyond the Cup

Beyond the Cup

Our food is crafted with care under the guidance of Chef Nicolas Castillo, who defines our kitchen’s bold flavors. We source fresh, local ingredients to create high-quality dishes that shine. Favorites include the Croffle ham sandwich, flaky and savory, and the Smoked Salmon Toast, loved for its vibrant taste. Our Avocado Egg Toast and La Amour Crepe bring comfort and creativity to every table, reflecting the heart of Foreigner Café.
